The Sri Lankan Blue Magpie is one of the most vibrant and iconic endemic birds of Sri Lanka. With its brilliant blue plumage, chestnut head, and long graduated tail, it is a true jewel of the rainforest. Known for its intelligence and social behavior, this species is often seen moving in small groups through the forest canopy.

🌳 Habitat
The Sri Lankan Blue Magpie inhabits tropical lowland rainforests, preferring dense, undisturbed forest interiors with tall trees and rich canopy cover.
📍 Distribution
It is mainly found in Sri Lanka’s wet zone forests, especially Sinharaja, Kanneliya, and nearby rainforest reserves. Being an endemic species, its range is limited to the island.
🐦 Behavior
Feeding Behavior
This bird is omnivorous, feeding on insects, small vertebrates, fruits, and seeds. It actively forages in the canopy and sometimes joins mixed-species feeding flocks.
Social Behavior
The Sri Lankan Blue Magpie is highly social and usually seen in small noisy groups. Members communicate with a variety of calls and often move together while foraging.
Breeding
Breeding occurs within dense forest habitats, where nests are built high in trees. Both parents participate in caring for the young.

The Sri Lankan Blue Magpie is classified as Vulnerable, mainly due to habitat loss and fragmentation of rainforest ecosystems. Protecting these forests is crucial for its survival.

Using my Canon 80D with a 400 mm lens, I captured this colorful species in its natural habitat.
